Spanish Love Poems by Pablo Neruda

If you want to get familiar with the traits that make Latin culture so appealing, the arts are a great way to begin. Latin America has a rich art history, which is a result of centuries of Spanish influence on a resilient native culture. When it comes to language, it you are learning Spanish, literature is the best way to begin, and in case you are wondering how love is expressed in Latin culture, you may want to explore classic, deeply romantic and sexy reading material.

There are plenty of examples that transcend time, but if there is one piece of work that is widely known as the most romantic book in Latin American literature, it has to be “Twenty Love Poems and a Song of Despair” by Pablo Neruda.

Although later in his life Neruda’s work became more political and he himself was a renowned communist activist, Twenty Love Poems is still its most popular piece of work and stands out for its melancholy and eroticism, especially because it was produced at a very young age (written in 1924 when Neruda was 20 years old). It is considered one of the most romantic pieces of modern Latin American literature and a compendium of metaphors to describe love at all stages, since it blooms until it ends.

The most famous poem in the book is “Poema 20”. Below, an excerpt.

Ya no la quiero, es cierto, pero cuánto la quise.
Mi voz buscaba el viento para tocar su oído.
I no longer love her, true, but how much I loved her.
My voice searched the wind to touch her ear.

De otro. Será de otro. Como antes de mis besos.
Su voz, su cuerpo claro. Sus ojos infinitos.
Someone else's. She will be someone else's. As she once
belonged to my kisses.
Her voice, her light body. Her infinite eyes.

Ya no la quiero, es cierto, pero tal vez la quiero.
Es tan corto el amor, y es tan largo el olvido.
I no longer love her, true, but perhaps I love her.
Love is so short and oblivion so long.

Porque en noches como ésta la tuve entre mis brazos,
Mi alma no se contenta con haberla perdido.
Because on nights like this I held her in my arms,
my soul is lost without her.

Aunque éste sea el último dolor que ella me causa,
y éstos sean los últimos versos que yo le escribo.
Although this may be the last pain she causes me,
and this may be the last poem I write for her.’

This poem has millions of fans all over the world. It has been translated into many languages and admired by both Spanish and non-Spanish speakers, for its depth, its metaphors and content, and one of the symbols of modern Latin American poetry.

You can let the feelings wash over you and remember a similar time in your life perhaps. Poetry has the ability to put you in touch with your feelings and in doing so gives more color and richness to your life.
